Worthless?

Many times, religion as a word, provokes negative ideas of interaction between different groups and denominations. Or, one may be pleased with the thought of religious affiliation and hide behind the tradition of what they perceive as living righteously. Speaking to those “religions” who claim Christ as their Savior…no matter what “religion”…we are to be guided by God’s Word to show us how to live out what we believe.

James 1:27 speaks to this,

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”

Now, obviously, this seems simplistic…so I recommend reading it in context of James 1 (specifically vs. 21-27). James admonishes his readers to look deeply into God’s word and learn from what they see…then DO it! How worthless words are if we don’t back them up with a heart of sincerity and actions that prove it! It is plainly stated in verse 26…

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.”

Worthless! Don’t deceive yourself and believe that going through religious “motions” proves you are worthy of reaching heaven. Because we know (or should know) that no one is good enough to get to heaven (Ephesians 2:8-9). And how can we say we believe God’s Word when we use our tongues as weapons and refuse to be available to help those in need? Show me your faith…show the world your faith…then tell them about it! Give them the opportunity to be freed from sin and reconciled with God.
